VILMA TIMONEN

Vilma Timonen is a Lecturer of Folk Music at the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki, Finland. She has worked in various musical settings as one of the pioneers to use the traditional Finnish instrument kantele in innovative ways. She was among the first kantele artists to play the electric kantele and has especially focused on developing the role of the kantele as a diverse band instrument. Vilma Timonen has given concerts in Spain, Venezuela, Columbia, the USA, Japan, Portugal, Zambia and Tanzania, and has had a comprehensive career as a kantele musician in dance and theatre productions.

I am eager to teach you about music in Africa, as well as pedagogical approaches, international project management, and research skills in the field of intercultural music education.

EVA SAETHER

Dr. Eva Saether is a Senior Lecturer and postdoctoral research fellow in Music Education Research at Lund University, Malmö Academy of Music, Sweden. Her musical background and point of departure is Swedish folk music. In 2003, she defended her doctoral thesis The Oral University: Attitudes to music teaching and learning in the Gambia. Her study of meaningful engagement and social inclusion in music education was the focus of four years of collaborative research with an international team of researchers, resulting in several refereed journal publications in 2008. Her current research includes the projects “Playing yourself Persian or Swedish”, and “jam2jam”, an international research project on collaborative online music systems. She is a contributing editor of the book Music in Motion: Diversity and Dialogue in Europe.

I am excited to be coordinating this innovative international-collaborative program, and will be teaching you research skills and sharing my experiences to guide you toward creative musicianship via a deeper understanding of traditions from throughout the world.

DAVID HEBERT

Dr. David G. Hebert is a Professor of Music with the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. His previous academic positions were with Boston University (USA), Japan National Institutes for the Humanities (Nichibunken, Kyoto), Moscow State University (Russia), and Te Wananga o Aotearoa (New Zealand). A prolific researcher - with music writings published (or in press) in over 15 scholarly journals and as chapters in 10 books (including Music of Japan Today, De-Canonizing Music History, Music Education for Changing Times, and Multicultural Perspectives in Music Education) - he is widely cited as a specialist in music hybridity and global music education. He has directed doctoral dissertations for Boston University and Sibelius Academy, served in editorial roles for several research journals, and attracted grants from diverse sources. Prof. Hebert currently serves as Chair of the Historical Ethnomusicology special interest group of the international organization Society for Ethnomusicology. He is also a songwriter and trumpeter.

LENA GREGERSEN

Lena Gregersen is an Associate Professor with the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, Denmark, specializing in “Singing, Dancing and Playing,” within the Music and Movement programs. She has traveled to Cuba and Brazil several times and is deeply interested in Afro-Latin cultures, particularly the way that music and dance are integrated into daily life. She has also studied dance in African nations, and much of her teaching is based on African diasporic traditions in which music and movement are intertwined.

PAR MOBERG

Pär Moberg is a Lecturer in folk music at the Malmo Academy of Music in Sweden. A multi-instrumentalist and composer, he plays the saxophone, didgeridoo, flutes, and hurdy-gurdy in many different constellations (Tummel, Rand, Grannar, Oomaigosh, Högtryck, and Trio Lagerkvist, to mention a few). Pär teaches folk music ensemble, saxophone, ensemble didactics, music and society, and composition with world music influences.
